The Faculty of Environmental Sciences at King Abdulaziz University hosted the closing ceremony for the “Complete Sustainable Healthy Environment Initiative” and the “Gheras & Shade Initiative”, celebrating their achievements and contributions to sustainability, public awareness, and community engagement.

The event, held at the King Fahd Medical Research Center Theater, was attended by Dr. Adel bin Abdullah Al-Qurashi, Dean of the Faculty, and Dr. Ahmed bin Saleh Summan, President of the Saudi Society for Environmental Sciences at the university. The ceremony included honoring sponsors, participating organizations, and competition winners from both initiatives. A visual showcase highlighted key activities and outcomes, produced in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, the Community Service Unit, and the Saudi Society for Environmental Sciences.

Launched as part of Environment Week 2025, under the theme “Our Environment is a Treasure,” the initiative ran for nearly five months and achieved significant reach and engagement:

            •           Over 70,000 individuals reached, including university staff, green schools, and the public

            •           4,800 awareness hours delivered

            •           More than 1,200 volunteers participated

            •           6 awareness lectures, 1 panel discussion, and a training program benefiting over 730 individuals

 

Key Accomplishments:

 

            •           1,500 kg of coastal waste removed through the campaigns “Eyes on the Sea” and “With Our Hands, Our Beaches Are More Beautiful

            •           3 tons of used clothing recycled, enabling the distribution of 1,500 new garments to over 200 families

            •           3,700 kg of electronic waste collected and delivered to Holoul Recycling Company, with 14 university departments contributing over 13 working hours

            •           Online content from the initiatives reached over 460,000 views across university and partner platforms

 

In parallel, the Gheras & Shade Initiative, launched in conjunction with Arab Agriculture Day 2025, promoted environmental stewardship through tree planting, awareness campaigns, and volunteer engagement:

 

            •           A panel discussion attended by over 160 participants

            •           More than 500 saplings planted, in collaboration with 12+ partner entities

            •           10 educational posters published to support the campaign’s message

            •           430+ participants and volunteers involved across the initiative

            •           820 volunteer hours contributed

 

These efforts reflect King Abdulaziz University’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community-focused initiatives.
